For Students : Services: In-Room Network Connections: Finding Your Hardware Ethernet Address: Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11

These versions of Windows are no longer officially supported.

However, you can find information on setting up your network connection with the following old list of instructions.

Preparing for network software installation

Download Trumpet and Windows Sockets FTP Client Application

The Trumpet software enables your Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 PC to establish an internet connection. Since you can not download Trumpet to your computer, we recommend downloading it now while you are in the cluster.

  1. Make sure you have two PC-formatted floppy disk with you. You can reformat the disks as PC disks on the cluster Macintosh by inserting your disk, selecting the disk, choosing "Erase Disk..." form the "Special" Menu, and selecting "DOS 1.4MB" from the "Format" option.
  2. Next, follow the URL link below to download Trumpet. Please note that you MUST have a valid SUNet ID and password (formerly known as Leland username and password) and will need to enter it when prompted by WebAuth.

Installing network adapter drivers and TCP/IP properties

For this step we'll install the network adapter driver so your computer recognizes and functions with its networking hardware. Then we will need to install the Trumpet TCP/IP Protocol so your computer can communicate with Stanford's network.

Install the Network Adaptor Driver. You will need to use the Packet Driver that came with your Ethernet Adaptor. Follow the instructions that came with your Ethernet Adaptor.

Install the TCP/IP Protocol.

  1. Insert your Trumpet installation diskette into drive A or B.

  2. Pull down the Windows Program Manager File menu and choose Run. In the dialog box that opens, type a:\setup or b:\setup, depending on which drive you inserted the Trumpet diskette into. Click OK. NOTE: If you are installing onto a Windows for Workgroups 3.11 system, ignore any Trumpet warnings about installing a different software program, and continue with the Trumpet installation anyway.

  3. Be sure to follow Setup's messages and promptings carefully. Click the HELP button at any point for further help.

  4. To install support for your 3Com network adapter:
    • When prompted to "Select Components to Install", choose both:
      • Trumpet for Ethernet connection
      • Your network card model number if listed. Be careful! Do NOT select the wrong card, even if the numbers are close!

    • If you selected "Other" when installing Trumpet, complete the following steps:
      • Start Notepad (usually in the Accessories Group)
      • Under the File menu, pick Open. Edit the file "c:\autoexec.bat"
      • Find the line that starts windows. It will look very much like c:\windows\win
      • On the line immediately above that line, add the following two commands:
        	c:\trumpet\3c5x9pd 0x60
        	c:\trumpet\winpkt 0x60

      • Install the Windows Packet Driver that came with your network card.

The details of the installation are also in the document called "How to Finish Installing Trumpet" (INSTALL.WRI). NOTE: Contrary to the comments in the Trumpet documentation, it is the recommended TCP/IP stack for use under Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Unfortunately no other support is available if you have difficulty with these instructions.

Find out your Ethernet hardware address

When you register for an in-room connection (in a later step) you will need to know certain information about your computer. One of the most important pieces of information that you need to provide is your computer's Ethernet hardware address.

Below are two methods for determining your Ethernet Hardware Address. Please note that you can NOT register for your inroom connection without your Ethernet Hardware Address.

  1. Run the Diagnostics Program that came with your network card. Instructions on how to run the diagnostic utility can be found in the network adapter manual. If you have a 3Com card, the diagnostic program is named after the the model number (without any letters at the end) followed by the three letters "cfg." For example, the 3C509B cards have a diagnostic utility named "3c5x9cfg" and the 3C900 and 3C905 cards use the diagnostics program "3c90xcfg" on Disk 1. Do not run the Autolink software program bundled with the 3Com cards. Refer to the documenation that came with the network card for more information.

  2. If the diagnostics program does not show the Ethernet hardware address, or your are unable to find the program/installation disk, try looking on the adapter itself if you have an external transceiver or a laptop. Many adapters show EA= followed by twelve alphanumeric digits that are the Ethernet hardware address.

Configuring TCP/IP properties

After you have registered you connection you should now load Trumpet.

  1. To Start Trumpet for Windows, double click on the "Trumpet for Ethernet" icon in the Trumpet program group. This program must be loaded each time you want to use the network. To make the program load automatically, drag and drop the icon from its current program group to the Startup group (you may need to create this group using File->New if it does not already exist).

  2. Due to a bug in the Trumpet software, DO NOT select File->Setup from within Trumpet. Opening the dialog box can cause the installation to be permanently corrupted which would result in your inroom connection no longer working. If you believe your system has been affected by this bug, please contact your RCC for a replacement configuration file or reinstall Trumpet.
