Information & News: Student Computing @ Stanford: Results from the Annual Residence Evaluation: 2007-2008: Undergraduate

Summary

Results:

Summary

Demographics:

This year, 2726 students or 41% of all undergrads responded to the survey, with slightly more women responding to the survey (54%) than men. About 44% were first-year students, 21% sophomores, 16% juniors, 18% seniors and the remaining with students who have been at Stanford for five or more years or co-terminal degree students.

Use of Computers and Related Equipment

Regarding equipment of those who responded to the survey:

In terms of platform:

Most students say they use their computers between four to eight hours a day, with 36% four to six hours a day, 27% six to eight hours a day, and 17% more than 8 hours a day.

Students were asked to rank how often they use their personal computers for activities in five broad categories. The most popular results were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  3. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  4. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  5. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

With 94% of students with laptops, students were asked specifically where around campus they used their laptops. The top five locations listed were:

  1. Your room on campus, 95%
  2. Other students' rooms, 68%
  3. Other residential common spaces (lounge etc.), 58%
  4. Classrooms, 56%
  5. Green Library, 37%

Personal Computing

Students were asked a number of questions related to their use of Web 2.0 technologies, such as blogs and wikis, both inside and outside of the classroom. In reference to class-related activities, some students are participating in blogs (21%), wikis (37%), and general websites (other than blogs, wikis, or CourseWork sites) (32%). Eighty-seven percent of students said they used class sites on CourseWork, the University's main courseware system, and seven percent even used CourseWork for non-course related purposes.

Students are also using these technologies outside the classroom:

As aforementioned, 69% of those who responded about what type of equipment they owned said they had a portable music player (MP3, iPod, etc.) and of those, 91% are iPod owners. Stanford on iTunes U provides access to a wide range of Stanford-related digital audio content via the iTunes Music Store at itunes.stanford.edu and itunes.stanford.edu/community/ and course-related content via CourseWork. Most students (72%) said they were aware of/familiar with the service and of those, 40% have used it.

While most students used their Stanford email service directly (via Webmail or an email client) as their primary email service, the majority of the remaining students said they used Google's Gmail (82%). About half (55%) of students said they forwarded their email to a different email service.

When it came to maintaining their schedules, about half of students (53%) said they used some type of electronic system (Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, iCal, or the calendar on their cell phones), but 47% of remaining students said they used paper planners/organizers.

Students were also asked about their mobile phone usage-- 49% of students said they used their mobile phones to take pictures. Other activities included checking email (14%), tracking their schedules (16%), taking video (16%), browsing the web (14%) and listening to music (15%).

The need for better wireless network coverage/service was cited in many student comments.

Social Networking

Students were asked a number of questions specifically related to their use of social networking on sites such as Facebook. Almost all students visit a social networking site and forty-eight percent of students said they visited Facebook several times a day. Students use these sites most to stay in touch with friends they rarely see in person (96%), stay in touch with friends they see a lot (79%), and make plans with friends (79%). Their most common activities include posting messages to their friends' pages or walls (97%), sending private messages to their friends (96%), and inviting friends to events (73%). Ninety-six percent of students have also uploaded photos or linked to a social networking site or to a social media site (e.g., Flickr, YouTube) in the last six months while thirty-two percent have uploaded video.

File-sharing and Copyright

In light of recent law suits and complaints filed against college students for using computer networks to illegally share copyrighted materials, Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about file-sharing, copyright law, and University policies and practices. For more information, please visit the File-sharing and Copyright Law FAQ.

Since 2004-2005, the survey has included questions on students' awareness of copyright issues. This year, students were asked specifically about recent lawsuits and University policies-- first, students were asked about their awareness of the recent efforts of record companies to stop unlawful file-sharing by targeting college students with the threat of lawsuits and further, that over 30 Stanford students have received these "pre-litigation" letters since 2007, paying collectively some $100,000 in settle costs to the record companies. While most students (80%) said they were aware of these recent events, of those, 12% admitted that they knew about the campaign, but not about the Stanford students.

In addition to these recent efforts, Stanford has also implemented a network reconnection fee related to copyright complaints. (That is, if the Information Security Office needs to disconnect a computer after a first complaint, there's a $100 fee for reconnection; after a second complaint, a $500 fee; and a third complaint is referred to Judicial Affairs where the panel may impose a fee up to $1000 in addition to other disciplinary measures.) Sixty-one percent of students said they knew about the fees (although 38% of those students said they did not know the details).

Students commented that they wished Stanford would be more "conducive and accepting of peer-to-peer file distribution" and that while they understood the legal issues, they wished Stanford would take a stronger stance against the RIAA and MPAA's efforts, citing other schools' policies (including Harvard).

Privacy

Interestingly, some students also commented on privacy issues related to the survey asking questions about, for example, usage of their mobile phones or Facebook and other social networking sites since Stanford does not directly control such services. Some also questioned privacy policies regarding network usage-- for example, students commented about the privacy of data transferred over the network, information available in StanfordWho, etc.

RCCs

Resident Computer Consultants (RCCs) are students who live in each residence and serve on house staffs as local network managers by supporting in-room network connections, educators by running residential programs on computing and working with students in general, consultants by helping residents with computer problems, cluster technicians by helping to take care of the residence clusters, and more. They are managed by the RCC Manager (and the Resident Fellow(s) where applicable) and receive support and training from the entire ResComp central staff. RCCs are the first line of support for residential students and are an integral part of residential life. For more information about RCCs, click here.

Seventy-three percent of students said they have asked their RCC for computer related help or advice with the majority of them (90%) asking for help one to five times this past year (the survey was conducted during the middle of February). The majority of questions (76%) were related to use of the wireless network. Other questions also included use of the cluster printer (22%), the wired network (21%), and software programs (20%). Fourteen percent of students said they also asked their RCCs questions unrelated to technology (e.g., academic or personal issues).

On average, 89% of requests were acknowledged with 24 hours (and 80% of those within the same day) and 95% within two days. On average, 81% of problems were resolved within 24 hours (and 78% of those within the same day) and 91% within two days. Of course, in some cases it takes a longer time to resolve issues. In those cases, 88% of students responded that students felt that the RCC's response time was reasonable.

Ninety-four percent of students rated their RCC's knowledge as excellent or good and 90% rated their RCC's willingness to help as excellent or good. Ninety percent of students also rated their RCC's availability as always available or usually available. Ninety-two percent of students said that, overall, they were either very satisfied or satisfied with their RCCs.

Residence Computing Spaces

Residential Computing supports a computer cluster in every residence, roughly 350 public computers in 77 locations. Seventy percent of students said they have used a residence cluster for any purpose (computing, printing, study, etc.). Of those students, most students said they either used it regularly (at least once a month) (35%) or rarely (once or twice a quarter) (49%).

The top five most significant reasons for using the residence clusters are:

  1. Study space away from room (54% of cluster users)
  2. Printing (54%)
  3. Availability of specialized software (Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop, etc.) (47%)
  4. Availability of group/partner work space (38%)
  5. Availability of general software (Web, email, Word) (37%)

Students who do use the residence cluster were asked to rank how often they used it for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)
  4. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  5. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  6. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

For students who use the residence clusters, the top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of residence clusters are:

  1. More support for laptops or mobile devices (e.g., large external displays, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (43% of cluster users)
  2. Better defined spaces for individual study (37%)
  3. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (36%)
  4. More multimedia production equipment (e.g. video editing, scanning, etc.) (33%)
  5. More computers with specialized software (e.g., Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop) (31%)

Many students noted that they primarily used the cluster when their personal computer were unavailable or broken. Many students also commented on the desire for better (with both the printing system software and keeping the printer stocked with paper and toner) and cheaper (or free) printing. Finally, many students also commented that they wished their residential cluster was more comfortable, inviting, etc., with better lighting, furniture, and general atmosphere.

Public Computing Spaces

Student Computing, Residential Computing's parent organization, also provides central public computer clusters and study space in Meyer Lobby, Meyer 2nd Floor, Meyer Multimedia Studio, Meyer 24-study room and Tresidder LAIR. Consulting support is also provided at the Meyer Tech Desk by Consulting and Multimedia Services (CAMS), another part of Student Computing. Sixty-one percent of students who answered the survey say they have used one of these spaces this year.

The top five most significant reasons for using the central public clusters are:

  1. Study space away from residence (67% of cluster users)
  2. Availability of group/partner work space (43%)
  3. General printing (41%)
  4. Availability of general software (Web, email, Word) (38%)
  5. Social environment, atmosphere (28%)

Students who do use the public clusters were asked to rank how often they used them for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)
  4. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)
  5. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  6. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)

For students who use the public clusters, the top five services that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of public clusters if they were offered or enhanced in our public computing/study spaces:

  1. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (36% of cluster users)
  2. Better defined spaces for individual study (35%)
  3. More support for laptops or mobile devices (e.g. large external displays, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (35%)
  4. Professional/photo-quality printing (30%)
  5. More computers with specialized software (e.g. Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop) (21%)

For students who use the public clusters, the top five suggested services that students say "would be great" if offered or enhanced in public computing/study spaces:

  1. Access to cluster software on your laptop or mobile device (42% of cluster users)
  2. Staff available for research or reference help (32%)
  3. LCD projectors available for checkout (31%)
  4. Computing help with your laptop or mobile device (troubleshooting, connectivity, viruses, etc.) (30%)
  5. More video cameras available for checkout (26%)

The second floor of Meyer also houses the Multimedia Studio. Students who use the space use it for a variety of multimedia purposes, such as digital video editing (46%), image scanning (39%), image editing (27%), DVD burning (26%), and video duplication/conversion (21%).

Many students again commented on the desire for better and cheaper printing services. Many commented that they often used and found very helpful for interactive grading and getting help in CS classes during regular office hours in Meyer Library and Tresidder. While many students use the public computing spaces to study away from their residences, they also noted that these study spaces should be improved. Improvements suggested including better furniture and general environment as well as better resources, such as printers and computers.
