Summary

Results:

Summary

Demographics:

This year, 515 students or approximately 13% of all on-campus housed graduate students* responded to the survey, 63% of them male. 47% of students identified themselves as being part of the School of Engineering, 26% part of Humanities and Sciences, and the remaining students distributed across the remaining schools. Most students were enrolled in Masters (30%) or Doctoral (62%) programs and a significant portion (33%) identified themselves as being international (non-US citizen/permanent resident) students (there are many more international students in the graduate programs in general). This year a few questions were asked of off-campus graduate students as well, but the response rate was very low.

Use of Computers and Related Equipment

Regarding equipment of those who responded to the survey:

In terms of platform:

Most students say they use their computers from a minimum of four to more than eight hours per day, with 24% at four to six hours, 29% at six to eight hours, and 32% at more than eight hours per day.

Students were asked to rank how often they use their personal computers for activities in five broad categories. The most popular results were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  4. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  5. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

With 93% of students with laptops, students were asked specifically where around campus they used their laptops. The top five locations listed were:

  1. Your room on campus, 88%
  2. Classrooms, 47%
  3. Department or administrative offices, 40%
  4. Other students' rooms, 30%
  5. Campus outdoor areas (White Plaza, Quad, etc.), 30%

Personal Computing

Students were asked a number of questions related to their use of Web 2.0 technologies, such as blogs and wikis, both inside and outside of the classroom. In reference to class-related activities, some students are participating in wikis (16%) and general websites (other than blogs, wikis, or CourseWork sites) (26%). Seventy-five percent of students said they used class sites on CourseWork, the University's main courseware system, and six percent even used CourseWork for non-course related purposes.

Students are also using these technologies outside the classroom:

As aforementioned, 65% of those who responded about what type of equipment they owned said they had a portable music player (MP3, iPod, etc.) and of those, 74% are iPod owners. Stanford on iTunes U provides access to a wide range of Stanford-related digital audio content via the iTunes Music Store at itunes.stanford.edu and itunes.stanford.edu/community/ and course-related content via CourseWork. Most students (66%) said they were aware of/familiar with the service and of those, 34% have used it.

While a majority of students used their Stanford email service directly (via Webmail or an email client) as their primary email service, most of the remaining students said they used Google's Gmail (87%). Less than half (42%) of students said they forwarded their email to a different email service.

When it came to maintaining their schedules, more than half of students (63%) said they used some type of electronic system (Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, iCal, or the calendar on their cell phones), while 23% said they used paper planners/organizers.

Students were also asked about their mobile phone usage-- 39% of students said they used their mobile phones to take pictures. Other activities included checking email (13%), tracking their schedules (17%), taking video (12%), browsing the web (13%) and listening to music (14%).

The need for better wireless network coverage/service was cited in many student comments.

Social Networking

Students were asked a number of questions specifically related to their use of social networking on sites such as Facebook. Most students visit a social networking site and forty-three percent of students said they visited Facebook at least once a day. Students use these sites most to stay in touch with friends they rarely see in person (93%), stay in touch with friends they see a lot (64%), and make plans with friends (42%). Their most common activities include sending private messages to their friends (79%), posting messages to their friends' pages or walls (77%), and poking/winking at/giving kudos to/etc. their friends (45%). Ninety-three percent of students have also uploaded photos or linked to a social networking site or to a social media site (e.g., Flickr, YouTube) in the last six months while twenty-seven percent have uploaded video.

File-sharing and Copyright

In light of recent law suits and complaints filed against college students for using computer networks to illegally share copyrighted materials, Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about file-sharing, copyright law, and University policies and practices. For more information, please visit the File-sharing and Copyright Law FAQ.

Since 2004-2005, the survey has included questions on students' awareness of copyright issues. This year, students were asked specifically about recent lawsuits and University policies-- first, students were asked about their awareness of the recent efforts of record companies to stop unlawful file-sharing by targeting college students with the threat of lawsuits and further, that over 30 Stanford students have received these "pre-litigation" letters since 2007, paying collectively some $100,000 in settle costs to the record companies. While most students (86%) said they were aware of these recent events, of those, 31% admitted that they knew about the campaign, but not about the Stanford students.

In addition to these recent efforts, Stanford has also implemented a network reconnection fee related to copyright complaints. (That is, if the Information Security Office needs to disconnect a computer after a first complaint, there's a $100 fee for reconnection; after a second complaint, a $500 fee; and a third complaint is referred to Judicial Affairs where the panel may impose a fee up to $1000 in addition to other disciplinary measures.) Forty-seven percent of students said they knew about the fees (although 40% of those students said they did not know the details).

Students commented that they disapproved of Stanford's assumption that file-sharing was illegal, and its use of copyright complaints as evidence of wrongdoing to support disconnecting and fining students. They were concerned that the evidence presented was "dubious" and that there was no method for students to contest such claims. They wished Stanford would take a stronger stance against the RIAA and MPAA's efforts, and not give in to their "bullying."

RCCs

Resident Computer Consultants (RCCs) are students who live in each residence and serve as local network managers by supporting in-room network connections, consultants by helping residents with computer problems, cluster technicians by helping to take care of the residence clusters, and more. In the graduate residences, RCCs are distributed within each complex (rather than one for each individual residence as in the undergraduate residences). They are managed by the RCC Manager and receive support and training from the entire ResComp central staff. RCCs are the first line of support for residential students. For more information about RCCs, click here.

In the graduate residences, students are less likely to ask their RCCs for help-- only 44% of students have asked their RCC for computer related help or advice this past year compared to 73% among undergraduates, and the majority of them (98%) asking for help one to five times this past year (the survey was conducted in mid to late March). Most students asked questions that related to use of the wireless network (61%), and the wired network (49%).

On average, 79% of requests were acknowledged with 24 hours (and 46% of those within the same day) and 91% within two days. On average, 59% of problems were resolved within 24 hours (and 40% of those within the same day) and 86% within two days. Of course, in some cases it takes a longer time to resolve issues. In those cases, 83% of students responded that students felt that the RCC's response time was reasonable.

Of those who had an opinion, 93% of students rated their RCC's knowledge as excellent or good and 89% rated their RCC's willingness to help as excellent or good. 91% percent of students also rated their RCC's availability as always available or usually available. 88% percent of students said that, overall, they were either very satisfied or satisfied with their RCCs.

Since graduate RCCs are distributed within each complex and students are less likely to live in the same building as their RCCs and have regular face-to-face interaction with them, students were also asked questions about how they obtained technical help. Students overwhelmingly asked for help via email first (89%), with phone being the preferred secondary method for those that gave one. Problems were resolved mostly through email, but less so (75%), with some requiring an in-person visit.

Residence Computing Spaces

Residential Computing supports a computer cluster in every residence, roughly 350 public computers in 77 locations. In large graduate complexes, clusters are centrally located (rather than in each building). Only forty-one percent of students said they have used a residence cluster for any purpose (computing, printing, study, etc.). Of those students, 75% said they used it rarely (once or twice a quarter), and the bulk of the remainder said regularly (at least once a month).

The top five most significant reasons for using the residence clusters are:

  1. Printing (60% of cluster users)
  2. Availability of specialized software (Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop, etc.) (43%)
  3. Multimedia production (scanning, video editing, etc.) (35%)
  4. Availability of general software (Web, email, Word) (31%)
  5. Study space away from room (29%)

Students who do use the residence cluster were asked to rank how often they used it for activities in six broad categories. By far the most popular results among cluster users were, in order, ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use), and INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.).

For students who use the residence clusters, the top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of residence clusters are:

  1. More support for laptops or mobile devices (e.g., large external displays, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (38% of cluster users)
  2. More multimedia production equipment (e.g. video editing, scanning, etc.) (35%)
  3. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (33%)
  4. More computers with specialized software (e.g., Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop) (33%)
  5. Better defined spaces for individual study (29%)

Several students noted that they primarily used the cluster when their personal computers were old or unavailable. Many students also commented on the desire for more reliable printing, especially with regard to keeping the printer stocked with paper. Finally, students commented that they wished their residential cluster was cleaner and more inviting, with better lighting, furniture, and general atmosphere.

Public Computing Spaces

Student Computing, Residential Computing's parent organization, also provides central public computer clusters and study space in Meyer Lobby, Meyer 2nd Floor, Meyer Multimedia Studio, Meyer 24-study room and Tresidder LAIR. Consulting support is also provided at the Meyer Tech Desk by Consulting and Multimedia Services (CAMS), another part of Student Computing. Fifty-eight percent of students who answered the survey say they have used one of these spaces this year.

The top five most significant reasons for using the central public clusters are:

  1. Study space away from residence (51% of cluster users)
  2. Availability of group/partner work space (44%)
  3. Availability of general software (Web, email, Word) (41%)
  4. General printing (41%)
  5. Availability of specialized software (Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop, etc.) (36%)

Students who do use the public clusters were asked to rank how often they used them for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)
  4. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  5. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  6. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

For students who use the public clusters, the top five services that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of public clusters if they were offered or enhanced in our public computing/study spaces:

  1. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (36% of cluster users)
  2. More computers with specialized software (e.g. Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop) (35%)
  3. Better defined spaces for individual study (34%)
  4. More support for laptops or mobile devices (e.g. large external displays, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (31%)
  5. Professional/photo-quality printing (28%)

For students who use the public clusters, the top five suggested services that students say "would be great" if offered or enhanced in public computing/study spaces:

  1. Access to cluster software on your laptop or mobile device (47% of cluster users)
  2. LCD projectors available for checkout (37%)
  3. Computing help with your laptop or mobile device (troubleshooting, connectivity, viruses, etc.) (31%)
  4. Drop-off digitizing (e.g. dubbing, scanning) (27%)
  5. Multimedia workshops (video, audio, HTML, etc.) (25%)

The second floor of Meyer also houses the Multimedia Studio. Students who use the space use it for a variety of multimedia purposes, such as image scanning (57%), DVD burning (37%), digital video editing (32%), image editing (19%), and video duplication/conversion (19%).

Several students again commented on the desire for more reliable printing, especially with regard to keeping the printer stocked with paper, and several again commented that they wished the public clusters and computers were cleaner.

Notes:

* Residential Computing supports all graduate residences (Crothers, Crothers Memorial, Escondido Village, Lyman and Rains) with the exception of Schwab Residential Center. Schwab is supported by the Graduate School of Business.
