Information & News: Student Computing @ Stanford: Results from the Annual Residence Evaluation: 2006-2007: Undergraduate

Summary

Results:

Summary

Demographics:

This year, 2947 students or 44% of all undergrads responded to the survey, roughly split evenly between men and women. About 38% were first-year students, 25% sophomores, 18% juniors, 18% seniors and the remaining with students who have been at Stanford for five or more years or co-terminal degree students.

Use of Computers

Regarding equipment of those who responded to the survey:

In terms of platform:

Most students say they use their computers between two to eight hours a day, with 22% at two to four hours a day, 39% four to six hours a day, and 22% six to eight hours a day.

Students were asked to rank how often they use their personal computers for activities in five broad categories. The most popular results were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  3. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  4. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  5. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

With 93% of students with laptops, students were asked specifically where around campus they used their laptops. The top five locations listed were:

  1. Your room on campus, 92%
  2. Other students' rooms, 61%
  3. Classrooms, 52%
  4. Other residential common spaces (lounge etc.), 51%
  5. Green Library, 38%

Web 2.0-- Blogs, Wikis, Social Networking and More

This year's survey asked a number of questions related to students' use of Web 2.0 technologies, such as blogs, wikis, and social networking sites, both inside and outside of the classroom. In reference to class-related activities, some students are participating in blogs (14%), wikis (29%) and general websites (outside of blogs, wikis or Coursework sites) (25%). Students are also using these Web 2.0 technologies outside of the classroom:

Not only did a majority of students say they were using social networking site(s), but an overwhelming percentage of those who said they use these sites (93%) said they actively participated in Facebook specifically, using it at least once a week (not just maintaining an account and profile).

Digital Music Services

As aforementioned, 66% of those who responded about what type of equipment they owned said they had a portable music player (MP3, iPod, etc.) and of those students, 90% are iPod owners. Students were also asked from which online music services, if any, they had paid for music. Of the 44% of students who responded to the question, 91% of students said they have purchased music from the Apple iTunes Music Store. Also available through iTunes is Stanford-related digital audio content through the Stanford on iTunes U project at itunes.stanford.edu and itunes.stanford.edu/community/. Course-related content is also available via Coursework. Unfortunately, when asked, most students were either not aware of it (41%) or aware of it, but hadn't used it (38%).

File-sharing and Copyright

In light of recent law suits and complaints filed against college students for using computer networks to illegally share copyrighted materials, Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about file-sharing, copyright law, and University policies and practices. For more information, please visit the File-sharing and Copyright Law FAQ.

Since 2004-2005, the survey has included questions on students' awareness of copyright issues-- only four percent of students said they did did not know file-sharing copyrighted content without the permission of the rights holder violates both law and University policy and most students (74%) learned about this issue before coming to Stanford. This year, students were also asked if they were aware that Stanford will stop providing Internet services to students who receive multiple copyright complaints and most students (68%) said yes, they were already aware.

Desktop Security

With an increasing number of computer security vulnerabilities and exploits (such as viruses), Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about the importance of desktop security. For more information on desktop security, please visit the Practicing Safe Net page.

Almost all students said they took some action to keep their computers up-to-date and secure from viruses. The top five practices students employ are:

  1. Set administrator/login password on my computer (67%)
  2. Have Windows Update/Mac OS Software Update configured to run automatically (61%)
  3. Have Symantec/Norton AntiVirus or similar programs configured to run automatically (50%)
  4. Periodically run Symantec/Norton AntiVirus or similar programs (41%)
  5. Periodically run Windows Update or Mac OS Software Update (40%)

RCCs

Resident Computer Consultants (RCCs) are students who live in each residence and serve on house staffs as local network managers by supporting in-room network connections, educators by running residential programs on computing and working with students in general, consultants by helping residents with computer problems, cluster technicians by helping to take care of the residence clusters, and more. They are managed by the RCC Manager (and the Resident Fellow(s) where applicable) and receive support and training from the entire ResComp central staff. RCCs are the first line of support for residential students and are an integral part of residential life. For more information about RCCs, click here.

Seventy-three percent of students said they have asked their RCC for computer related help or advice with the majority of them (92%) asking for help one to five times this past year (the survey was conducted at the beginning of February). On average, 87% of requests were acknowledged with 24 hours (and 78% of those within the same day) and 94% within two days. On average, 83% of problems were resolved within 24 hours (and 76% of those within the same day) and 91% within two days. Of course, in some cases it takes a longer time to resolve issues. In those cases, 88% of students responded that students felt that the RCC's response time was reasonable.

Ninety-four percent of students rated their RCC's knowledge as excellent or good and 91% rated their RCC's willingness to help as excellent or good. Ninety percent of students also rated their RCC's availability as always available or usually available.

Residence Computing Spaces

Residential Computing supports a computer cluster in every residence, roughly 350 public computers in 77 locations. Seventy percent of students said they have used a residence cluster for any purpose (computing, printing, study, etc.). Of those students, most students said they either used it regularly (at least once a month) (38%) or rarely (once or twice a quarter) (45%).

The top five most significant reasons for using the residence clusters are:

  1. Availability of specialized software (Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop, etc.) (54% of cluster users)
  2. Printing (53%)
  3. Study space away from room (53%)
  4. Availability of general software (Web, email, Word) (40%)
  5. Availability of group/partner work space (34%)

Students who do use the residence cluster were asked to rank how often they used it for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  4. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)
  5. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  6. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

For students who use the residence clusters, the top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of residence clusters are:

  1. More support for laptops or mobile devices (e.g., large external displays, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (44% of cluster users)
  2. Better defined spaces for individual study (39%)
  3. Color printing (where not available) (37%)
  4. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (35%)
  5. More multimedia production equipment (e.g. video editing, scanning, etc.) (34%)

Many students commented on their frustration with printing services in both the residence computing spaces and RCC sections of the survey (since RCCs serve as cluster technicians by helping to take care of the clusters)-- many have had trouble this year because of poorly stocked printers (paper and toner), broken printers, or general problems with the print accounting service. The source of this rise in printing problems is unclear, but will certainly investigated to improve the quality of printing services for the future.

Many students also commented on the desire for their residence computing spaces to be more comfortable, including better furniture (especially chairs), air conditioning, and generally more inviting. Nevertheless, many students also commented that they often use the cluster when their own computers are broken or otherwise unavailable and find it a valuable resource at those times.

Public Computing Spaces

Public Computing, a part of Student Computing, Residential Computing's parent organization, also provides central public computer clusters and study space in Meyer Lobby, Meyer 2nd Floor, Meyer Multimedia Studio, Meyer 24-study room and Tresidder LAIR. Consulting support is also provided at the Meyer Tech Desk by Consulting and Multimedia Services (CAMS), another part of Student Computing. Fifty-three percent of students who answered the survey say they have used one of these spaces this year.

The top five most significant reasons for using the central public clusters are:

  1. Study space away from residence (69% of cluster users)
  2. Availability of general software (Web, email, Word) (45%)
  3. General printing (43%)
  4. Availability of group/partner work space (41%)
  5. Availability of specialized software (Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop, etc.) (35%)

Students who do use the public clusters were asked to rank how often they used it for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)
  4. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  5. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  6. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

For students who use the public clusters, the top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of public clusters are:

  1. More support for laptops or mobile devices (e.g. large external displays, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (39% of cluster users)
  2. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (37%)
  3. Better defined spaces for individual study (37%)
  4. Professional/photo-quality printing (33%)
  5. More computers with specialized software (e.g. Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop) (26%)

For students who use the public clusters, the top five services that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of public clusters if they were offered or enhanced in our public computing/study spaces:

  1. Access to cluster software on your laptop or mobile device (46% of cluster users)
  2. Video cameras available for checkout (44%)
  3. LCD projectors available for checkout (36%)
  4. Computing help with your laptop or mobile device (connectivity, viruses, etc.) (31%)
  5. Help with multimedia production (e.g. video editing) (27%)

The second floor of Meyer also houses the Multimedia Studio. Most students had learned about in a variety of ways-- e.g., through a friend (18%), from their PWR class (17%), or through a non-PWR professor or TA (10%)-- but a significant portion had not learned about it until the survey (49%). For those students who were aware of the multimedia studio and use it, they said they used it for digital video editing (46%), image scanning (37%), DVD burning (24%) and image editing (23%).

Students commented that they used these public computing spaces when they needed study space away from their room, especially during late hours, or when they needed quick access to computers between classes and have a few minutes to spare. Many students commented that they would like to see more individual and group study spaces in these public computing areas. Students also commented here again on the quality of printing services (difficulty with the print accounting system, poorly stocked and/or broken printers, etc.) as well as the desire for cheaper or free printing.
