Summary

Demographics:

This year, 526 students or approximately 13% of all on-campus housed graduate students* responded to the survey, 65% male. Forty-eight percent of students identified themselves as being part of the School of Engineering, 28% part of Humanities and Sciences, and the remaining students distributed across the remaining schools. Most students were enrolled in Masters (31%) or Doctoral (58%) programs and a significant portion (37%) identified themselves as being international (non-US citizen/permanent resident) students (there are many more international students in the graduate programs in general).

Use of Computers

Regarding equipment of those who responded to the survey:

In terms of platform:

Most students say they use their computers from a minimum of four to more than eight hours per day, with 23% at four to six hours, 24% at six to eight hours, and 33% at more than eight hours per day.

Students were asked to rank how often they use their personal computers for activities in five broad categories. The most popular results were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  4. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  5. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

With 91% of students with laptops, students were asked specifically where around campus they used their laptops. The top five locations listed were:

  1. Your room/residence on campus, 92%
  2. Classrooms, 41%
  3. Department or administrative offices, 34%
  4. Other students' rooms/residences, 32%
  5. Other libraries (than Green or Meyer Libraries), 26%

Web 2.0-- Blogs, Wikis, Social Networking and More

This year's survey asked a number of questions related to students' use of Web 2.0 technologies, such as blogs, wikis, and social networking sites, both inside and outside of the classroom. In reference to class-related activities, some students are participating in blogs (11%), wikis (14%) and general websites (outside of blogs, wikis or Coursework sites) (26%). Students are also using these Web 2.0 technologies outside of the classroom:

Not only did a majority of students say they were using social networking site(s), but an overwhelming percentage of those who said they use these sites (88%) said they actively participated in Facebook specifically, using it at least once a week (not just maintaining an account and profile).

Digital Music Services

As aforementioned, 50% of those who responded about what type of equipment they owned said they had a portable music player (MP3, iPod, etc.) and of those students, 76% are iPod owners. Students were also asked from which online music services, if any, they had paid for music. Of the 38% of students who responded to the question, 77% of students said they have purchased music from the Apple iTunes Music Store and 22% from Yahoo! Music Unlimited. Also available through iTunes is Stanford-related digital audio content through the Stanford on iTunes U project at itunes.stanford.edu and itunes.stanford.edu/community/. Course-related content is also available via Coursework. Unfortunately, when asked, most students were either not aware of the Stanford on iTunes U project (58%) or aware of it, but hadn't used it (31%).

File-sharing and Copyright

In light of recent law suits and complaints filed against college students for using computer networks to illegally share copyrighted materials, Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about file-sharing, copyright law, and University policies and practices. For more information, please visit the File-sharing and Copyright Law FAQ.

Since 2004-2005, the survey has included questions on students' awareness of copyright issues-- only seven percent of students said they did did not know file-sharing copyrighted content without the permission of the rights holder violates both law and University policy and most students (76%) learned about this issue before coming to Stanford. This year, students were also asked if they were aware that Stanford will stop providing Internet services to students who receive multiple copyright complaints and students were split in their awareness, 50% responding that they were not aware until now and 50% responding that they were already aware.

Desktop Security

With an increasing number of computer security vulnerabilities and exploits (such as viruses), Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about the importance of desktop security. For more information on desktop security, please visit the Practicing Safe Net page.

Almost all students said they took some action to keep their computers up-to-date and secure from viruses. The top five practices students employ are:

  1. Have Windows Update/Mac OS Software Update configured to run automatically (70%)
  2. Set administrator/login password on my computer (69%)
  3. Have Symantec/Norton AntiVirus or similar programs configured to run automatically (62%)
  4. Periodically run Symantec/Norton AntiVirus or similar programs (47%)
  5. Periodically update virus definition files (e.g. via LiveUpdate) (46%)

RCCs

Resident Computer Consultants (RCCs) are students who live in each residence and serve as local network managers by supporting in-room network connection, consultants by helping residents with computer problems, cluster technicians by helping to take care of the residence clusters, and more. In the graduate residences, RCCs are distributed within each complex (rather than one for each individual residence as in the undergraduate residences). They are managed by the RCC Manager and receive support and training from the entire ResComp central staff. RCCs are the first line of support for residential students. For more information about RCCs, click here.

In the graduate residences, students are less likely to ask their RCCs for help-- only 43% of students have asked their RCC for computer-related help or advice this past year compared to 73% among undergraduates and the majority of them (97%) asking for help one to five times this past year (the survey was conducted in mid to late March). On average, 89% of requests were acknowledged with 24 hours (and 53% of those within the same day) and 94% within two days. On average, 86% of problems were resolved within two dayss (and 73% of those within 24 hours). Of course, in some cases it takes a longer time to resolve issues. In those cases, 87% of students responded that students felt that the RCC's response time was reasonable.

Ninety-two percent of students rated their RCC's knowledge as excellent or good and 92% rated their RCC's willingness to help as excellent or good. Ninety-two percent of students also rated their RCC's availability as always available or usually available. In general, 92% of students said they were either very satisfied or satisfied overall with their RCC.

Since graduate RCCs are distributed within each complex and students are less likely to live in the same building as their RCCs and have regular face-to-face interaction with them, students were also asked the following questions related to getting technical help:

In reference to how they would prefer to request to get technical help, the most popular results were, in order:

  1. Email
  2. Webpage
  3. Phone
  4. In person

Some students also made other suggestions, such as instant messaging, "office hours" for regular support hours, and a more centralized system where students could submit help requests where any RCC could respond instead of the one assigned to your area (who may not be able to respond immediately). Of course, one student answered that his first preference would be "preemptive telepathy (predict problem and provide solution before problem presents)."

In reference to how they would prefer to receive technical help, after making a request for help, the most popular results were, in order:

  1. Email
  2. In person
  3. Phone
  4. Webpage

Here again, some students suggested instant messaging. Some also commented that it depended on the complexity of the problem-- simple problems could be addressed via email, more complex ones via phone, but the most complex ones in person.

Residence Computing Spaces

ResComp supports a residence cluster in every residence, roughly 350 public computers in 77 locations. In large graduate complexes, clusters are centrally located (rather than in each building). Only thirty-seven percent of students said they have used a residence cluster for any purpose (computing, printing, study, etc.). Of those students, most used it less than regularly with 65% using it rarely (once or twice a quarter, and maybe during finals) and 26% using it every now and then (every couple of weeks or so).

The top five most significant reasons for using the residence clusters are:

  1. Availability of specialized software (Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop, etc.) (54% of cluster users)
  2. Printing (54%)
  3. Availability of general software (Web, email, Word) (44%)
  4. Study space away from room (37%)
  5. Multimedia production (scanning, video editing, etc.) (36%)

Students who do use the residence cluster were asked to rank how often they used it for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  4. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)
  5. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  6. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

For students who use the residence clusters, the top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of residence clusters are:

  1. Color printing (where not available) (37% of cluster users)
  2. More multimedia production equipment (e.g. video editing, scanning, etc.) (36%)
  3. More computers with specialized software (e.g. Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop) (35%)
  4. More support for laptops or mobile devices (e.g., large external displays, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (33%)
  5. Better defined spaces for individual study (30%)

Public Computing Spaces

Public Computing, a part of Student Computing, Residential Computing's parent organization, also provides central public computer clusters and study space in Meyer Lobby, Meyer 2nd Floor, Meyer Multimedia Studio, Meyer 24-study room and Tresidder LAIR. Consulting support is also provided at the Meyer Tech Desk by Consulting and Multimedia Services (CAMS), another part of Student Computing. Thirty-nine percent of students who answered the survey say they have used one of these spaces this year.

The top five most significant reasons for using the central public clusters are:

  1. Study space away from residence (64% of cluster users)
  2. Availability of general software (Web, email, Word) (58%)
  3. General printing (55%)
  4. Availability of specialized software (Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop, etc.) (50%)
  5. Availability of group/partner work space (47%)

Students who do use the public clusters were asked to rank how often they used it for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)
  4. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  5. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  6. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

For students who use the public clusters, the top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of public clusters are:

  1. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (44% of cluster users)
  2. More support for laptops or mobile devices (e.g. large external displays, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (41%)
  3. Better defined spaces for individual study (41%)
  4. More computers with general software (Web, email, Word) (35%)
  5. More computers with specialized software (e.g. Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop) (33%)

For students who use the public clusters, the top five services that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of public clusters if they were offered or enhanced in our public computing/study spaces:

  1. Access to cluster software on your laptop or mobile device (50% of cluster users)
  2. Computing help with your laptop or mobile device (connectivity, viruses, etc.) (36%)
  3. LCD projectors available for checkout (33%)
  4. Drop-off digitizing (e.g. dubbing, scanning) (23%)
  5. More video cameras available for checkout (21%)

The second floor of Meyer also houses the Multimedia Studio. Most students had learned about either through a friend (11%) or saw it on the 2nd floor (near Technical Services Desk) (37%), but a significant portion had not learned about it until the survey (49%). For those students who were aware of the multimedia studio and use it, they said they used it for image scanning (67%), image editing (26%), digital video editing (20%) and/or DVD burning (19%).

Notes:

* Residential Computing supports all graduate residences (Crothers, Crothers Memorial, Escondido Village, Lyman and Rains) with the exception of Schwab Residential Center. Schwab is supported by the Graduate School of Business.
