Summary

Demographics:

This year, 1078 students or approximately 26% of all on-campus housed graduate students* responded to the survey, 67% male. Fifty-one percent of students identified themselves as being part of the School of Engineering, 24% part of Humanities and Sciences, and the remaining students distributed across the remaining schools. Most students were enrolled in Masters (35%) or Doctoral (51%) programs and a significant portion (37%) identified themselves as being international (non-US citizen/permanent resident) students (there are many more international students in the graduate programs in general).

Use of Computers

Regarding equipment of those who responded to the survey:

In terms of platform:

Most students say they use their computers between two to eight hours a day, with 26% at two to four hours a day, 24% four to six hours a day, and 30% six to eight hours a day.

Students were asked to rank how often they use their personal computers for activities in five broad categories. The most popular results were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  4. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  5. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

With 89% of students with laptops, this year's survey asked specifically where around campus they used their laptops. The top five locations listed were:

  1. Your room, 89%
  2. Academic departments, 59%
  3. Classrooms, 51%
  4. Libraries, 48%
  5. Other student rooms, 26%

Other locations students listed included campus cafes and labs.

Other general comments about personal computing mentioned dissatisfaction about this year's Yahoo! Music Unlimited pilot and the service's incompatibility with Mac (see Digital Music below) as well as the desire for adding or improving, wireless in their residences (see Wireless Networking below).

Wireless Networking

Many residences have University provided wireless networking while in many others the students/staff provide their own. A higher percentage of graduate students (24% versus 16% among undergraduates) said they owned wireless access points or routers, most likely because University provided wireless networking is not as widely available in graduate residences. For more information about University-provided wireless in the residences, please visit the Wireless in the Residences FAQ.)

Given the large number of students with laptops and the increasing wireless coverage on campus, students were asked how often they used wired versus wireless networking in the residences. Most students still used mostly wired networking, 55% answering they used either mainly wired or exclusively wired (although my residence has wireless) and 21% answering they used both wireless and wired pretty evenly.

Satisfaction with the quality of wireless networking was much lower in the graduate residences-- only 60% of students rated the quality OK, good or great compared to 84% in the undergraduate residences.

Blogs, Podcasting, and more

With the rise in popularity of blogs, RSS, photo sharing sites, podcasts and other Internet publishing platforms, students were asked about what forms of Internet content they consume or produce. Of students who responded to this question (65% of survey respondents), 59% of students said they read other people's blogs, 17% subscribe to RSS feeds, and 25% comment on other people's blogs. Twenty-two percent publish their own blogs, 38% maintain personal Web sites, and 40% say they share pictures online via services like Flickr. Fourteen percent subscribe to podcasts, but only less than one percent create podcasts.

In reference to online gaming, 14% say they play networked games from their computers or game consoles. As mentioned earlier, 10% of students who responded about equipment they owned said they had a game console (Xbox, PlaySation, etc.).

Digital Music

As aforementioned, 48% of those who responded about what type of equipment they owned said they had a portable music player (MP3, iPod, etc.) and of those students, 73% are iPod owners. Students were also asked from which online music services, if any, they had paid for music. Of the 40% of students who responded to the question, 70% of students said they have purchased music from the Apple iTunes Music Store and 30% from Yahoo! Music Unlimited.

Specifically with Yahoo! Music Unlimitied, the University is running a pilot of the online music service for the 2005-06 academic year. Students who participate in this service have free access (for the pilot period only) to all available tracks. Forty-three percent of students said that they were aware of the pilot, but had not used it, 15% said they had used it a little, and 14% said they use it all the time. Since the pilot is for this year only, if students were asked to pay roughly $20 to use it next year, 69% of students said that they would not subscribe to it. Many students commented on their dissatisfaction with the service because of its incompatibility with Mac and difficulty using it with an iPod.

Filesharing and Copyright

In light of recent law suits and complaints filed against college students for using computer networks to illegally share copyrighted materials, Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about file-sharing, copyright law, and University policies and practices. For more information, please visit the File-sharing and Copyright Law FAQ.

This year's survey included questions on students' awareness of copyright issues. Only nine percent of students said that they had no knowledge about the DMCA or copyright laws/policies. The top five ways in which students have learned about these laws and policies are:

  1. Was already exposed to these issues before I came to Stanford (57%)
  2. Read email about copyright sent to the Stanford community by the Provost (34%)
  3. Read summary of Stanford Computer and Network Usage Policy when registering my computer (27%)
  4. Read about issues in the Stanford Daily (11%)
  5. Know someone else who has received DMCA-related notices (10%)

Many students also said they heard about these issues through friends, online news sources or other publications.

Desktop Security

With an increasing number of computer security vulnerabilities and exploits (such as viruses), Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about the importance of desktop security. For more information on desktop security, please visit the Practicing Safe Net page.

Almost all students said they took some action to keep their computers up-to-date and secure from viruses. The top five practices students employ are:

  1. Have Windows Update/Software Update configured to run automatically (60%)
  2. Have Symantec/Norton AntiVirus or similar programs configured to run automatically (56%)
  3. Set administrator/login password on my computer (55%)
  4. Run Spy Sweeper, SpyBot or other anti-spyware software (47%)
  5. Have LiveUpdate or similar program configured to run automatically (41%)

Many students also commented that they chose to own/use a Mac (or even run Unix/Linux) to avoid many of the security issues associated with the Windows operating system.

RCCs

Resident Computer Consultants (RCCs) are students who live in each residence and serve as local network managers by supporting in-room network connection, consultants by helping residents with computer problems, cluster technicians by helping to take care of the residence clusters, and more. In the graduate residences, RCCs are distributed within each complex (rather than one for each individual residence as in the undergraduate residences). They are managed by the RCC Manager and receive support and training from the entire ResComp central staff. RCCs are the first line of support for residential students. For more information about RCCs, click here.

In the graduate residences, students are less likely to ask their RCCs for help-- only 44% of students have asked their RCC for computer-related help or advice this past year compared to 74% among undergraduates. Seventy-nine percent of those requests for help were acknowledged within 24 hours (49% of those the same day) and 93% within two days. On average, 84% of those requests were resolved within two days (76% of those in 24 hours). Of course, in some cases, it takes longer to resolve issues. In those cases, 75% of students felt that the RCC's response time was reasonable.

Eighty-nine percent of students rated their RCC's knowledge as excellent or good and 85% rated their RCC's willingness to help as excellent or good. Ninety-two percent of students also rated their RCC's availability as always available or usually available.

Residence Computer Spaces

ResComp supports a residence cluster in every residence, roughly 350 public computers in 77 locations. In large graduate complexes, clusters are centrally located (rather than in each building). Only thirty-nine percent of students said they have used a residence cluster for any purpose (computing, printing, study, etc.). Of those students, most used it less than regularly with 62% using it rarely (once or twice a quarter, and maybe during finals) and 28% using it every now and then (every couple of weeks or so).

The top five reasons for using the residence clusters are:

  1. Printing (cited by 46% of cluster users)
  2. Availability of computers in general (30%)
  3. Multimedia (scanning, video editing, etc.) (24%)
  4. Available course-specific software (Mathematica, SPSS) (21%)
  5. Convenient location (20%)

Students who do use the residence cluster were asked to rank how often they used it for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  4. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  5. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)
  6. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)

For students who use the residence clusters, the top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of residence clusters are:

  1. More support for laptops (e.g., shared displays, wireless networking, laptop-friendly furniture, collaboration software) (cited by 35% of cluster users)
  2. Color printing (where not available) (31%)
  3. More multimedia production equipment (e.g. video editing, scanning, etc.) (30%)
  4. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (26%)
  5. More high performance computers in general (24%)

Many students students commented on the need for cheaper or free printing to the cluster printers. Many comments also focued on the need for 24 hour access to the clusters as well as more computers in the cluster, both of which can be attributed to conditions that were results of a number of unfortunate thefts in the Escondido Village clusters earlier in the year.

Public Computer Spaces

Academic Computing, Residential Computing's parent organization, also provides central public computer clusters and study space in Meyer Lobby, Meyer 2nd Floor, Meyer Multimedia Studio, Meyer 24-study room and Tresidder LAIR. Forty percent of students who answered the survey say they have used one of these spaces this year.

The top five reasons for using the central public clusters are:

  1. Availability of course-specific software (Mathematica, SPSS, etc) (cited by 45% of cluster users)
  2. Multimedia (scanning, video editing, etc) (39%)
  3. Other (specified below) (24%)
  4. Print from my laptop (11%)
  5. Availability of consulting/tech help (7%) and TeamSpot (7%)

Other reasons listed included checking email, convenient location between classes, and study space (including for group work).

Students were also asked to rank how often they used the public clusters for activities in six broad categories. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. ACADEMICS (any course related computer or Internet use)
  2. INFORMATION (online news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.)
  3. SOCIAL INTERACTION (Facebook, instant messaging, social email, etc.)
  4. NON-COMPUTER ACTIVITIES (any non-computer academic or extracurricular activities, e.g. reading, study, meeting with other students, personal projects)
  5. ENTERTAINMENT (online music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.)
  6. COMMERCE (online shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.)

When asked what would substantially increase the usefulness of the Meyer, Tresidder and/or Green computer clusters, the top three choices were:

  1. Quick-hit kiosks for only e-mail and web browsing (cited by 51% of cluster users)
  2. Professional/photo-quality color printing (43%)
  3. More multimedia equipment (38%)

When asked what consulting services would they would find useful if they were offered or enhanced, the top five results were:

  1. Equipment checkout (e.g. laptops, DV cameras, projectors) (cited by 53% of cluster users)
  2. Computing help with your laptop (connectivity, viruses, etc.) (44%)
  3. Drop-off digitizing (e.g. scanning, dubbing) (35%)
  4. Multimedia workshops (video, audio, HTML, etc.) (44%)
  5. Online tutorials or training (31%)

Over the last two years, Academic Computing has been making changes to the physical spaces and facilities in Meyer Library and may decide to emphasize one type of space over another. Students were asked to rank which types of spaces would be most useful. The most popular results among cluster users were, in order:

  1. Group work spaces (e.g. whiteboards, study cubicles, large tables)
  2. Quiet study spaces
  3. Individual work spaces
  4. Social spaces for gathering, talking, etc.
  5. Other (specified below)

Other types of spaces listed included more 24-hour/late night study areas and more comfortable and social study areas.

The top three choices for improving group study spaces were:

  1. Whiteboards (cited by 74% of cluster users)
  2. Group study cubicles (enclosed but not private) (62%)
  3. Conference tables (41%)

Eighty-nine percent of students who responded about the equipment they owned said that they owned laptops and the libraries was one of the top locations they brought their laptops. Students were asked what would be the most useful to them when working with a laptop in Meyer, Tresidder, or Green. The top four choices were:

  1. More wireless coverage (cited by 46% of cluster users)
  2. Universal battery chargers (37%)
  3. Tables without computers (27%)
  4. Access to cluster software on your own laptop (31%)

The second floor of Meyer also houses the Multimedia Studio. Most students who are aware of the multimedia studio and use it said they used it for image scanning (77%) and digital video editing (43%).

Notes:

* Residential Computing supports all graduate residences (Crothers, Crothers Memorial, Escondido Village, Lyman and Rains) with the exception of Schwab Residential Center. Schwab is supported by the Graduate School of Business.
