Information & News: Student Computing @ Stanford: Results from the Annual Residence Evaluation: 2004-2005: Undergraduate

Summary

Results:

Summary

Demographics:

This year, 3048 students or approximately 46% of all undergrads responded to the survey, roughly split evenly between men and women. About 38% were first-year students, 25% sophomores, 18% juniors and 18% seniors.

Use of Computers

Regarding equipment:

In terms of platform:

About 90% of students say they use their computers 11 hours a week or more, with about 35% using their computers more than 30 hours per week.

Within five broad categories, the most common personal computer activities are, in order:

  1. Academics (any course-related computer or Internet use), 6 or more hours/week = 76%
  2. Social interaction (social email or discussion groups, instant messaging, chat, etc.), 6 or more hours/week = 42%
  3. Entertainment (music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.), 6 or more hours/week = 33%
  4. Information (news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.), 6 or more hours/week = 32%
  5. Commerce (shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.), 6 or more hours/week = 5%

In terms of suggestions for improvements to student computing resources and services in general, many comments were related to wireless networking or printing services. Many students expressed the desire to have wireless networking added to or improved in their residences (see below for more results on wireless in the residences). In terms of printing services, in contrast to last year's comments expressing a great desire for free (or cheaper) printing, most of this year's comments related to the quality rather than cost of printing services, such as better supplied printers (paper, toner), color printing, and double-sided printing capability.

Some students also expressed the desire to get more information and have access to more resources on computer security issues, such as how to protect themselves from viruses (or get rid of them if their computers are infected).

Digital Music Services, Filesharing and Copyright

In light of recent law suits and complaints filed against college students for using computer networks to illegally share copyrighted materials, Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, has been working to educate students about file-sharing, copyright law, and University policies and practices. For more information, please visit the File-sharing and Copyright Law FAQ.

This year's survey included questions on students' awareness of copyright issues. Eighty-three percent said they were somewhat to very familiar with copyright laws and policies. The top five ways in which students have learned about these laws and policies are:

  1. Was already exposed to these issues before I came to Stanford (57%)
  2. Read email about copyright sent to the Stanford community by the Provost (44%)
  3. Heard about issues from my RCC (43%)
  4. Read summary of Stanford Computer and Network Usage Policy when registering my computer (32%)
  5. Read about issues in the Stanford Daily (22%)

Many students also said they heard about these issues through friends and online news sources.

In addition to questions on students' awareness of copyright issues, this survey also included questions on student use of digital music services and related technologies. Of students who had purchased music from an online music service (approximately 25%), 92% had purchased music from the Apple iTunes Music Store and of the 53% of students who answered that they own a portable music player, 67% said they owned an Apple iPod. Seventy-nine percent said they use iTunes in some way, with 49% answering that they both play and share music via iTunes Sharing.

When asked how many tracks students have purchased from online music services, responses were somewhat evenly distributed. Of those who purchased at least one track from an online music service, 31% answered 1 to 5 tracks, 14% answered 6 to 10 tracks, 19% answered 11 to 25 tracks, 14% answered 26 to 50 tracks, and 21% answered more than 50 tracks. Willingness to pay $20 per year to subscribe to a campus music service was also split with 31% answering definitely or probably not, 23% answering maybe, and 47% answering probably or definitely yes. In general, more students felt that paying $20 per year for wireless networking in more residences was more important than subscribing to a campus music service or other technology priorities on campus (such as the availability of more multimedia equipment or a printing quota).

Desktop Security

With an increasing number of computer security vulnerabilities and exploits (such as viruses), Residential Computing, in collaboration with other University departments, have been working to educate students about the importance of desktop security. For more information on desktop security, please visit the Practicing Safe Net page.

Almost all students said they took some action to keep their computers up-to-date and secure from viruses. The top five practices students employ are:

  1. Set administrator/login password on my computer (54%)
  2. Have Symantec/Norton AntiVirus or similar programs configured to run automatically (53%)
  3. Run Spy Sweeper, SpyBot or other anti-spyware software (52%)
  4. Periodically run Symantec/Norton AntiVirus or similar programs (49%)
  5. Have Windows Update/Software Update configured to run automatically (48%)

In addition to education, the University also provides security software, including anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and BigFix, a software package adopted by Stanford for distributing OS patches and virus definitions. At the time of the survey, BigFix was being used by about 10,000 client computers on campus, but only about 1000 student computers. Of those students who answered that they did not use BigFix, the top three reasons were:

  1. I've never heard of it (65%)
  2. I use other methods to keep my computer secure (listed in the previous question) (19%)
  3. I don't know enough about it to install yet more software (15%)

Wireless Networking

Since the academic year 2002-2003, ResComp, in collaboration with ITSS, has been adding wireless networking to more and more residences around campus. For more information on this project, please visit the Wireless in the Residences FAQ.

Funding for adding wireless networking to all areas of campus is currently limited. As a result, wireless networking is currently being added to residential areas only as funds become available. This year, wireless has been available in Wilbur Hall, Stern Hall, Florence Moore Hall, some houses in Cowell Cluster, Bob (Robert Moore South House) and in the common areas of Roble Hall. Of the people who live in those residences and who responded to the survey, 58% say they use the wireless network at least several times a week, with 44% saying they use it daily. While most students use the wireless network in their own rooms (81%) or in house common areas, such as the lounge or hallway (81%), students say they are using the wireless network in all areas of their residences, including other students' rooms (63%), outdoors (40%) and in dining areas (40%).

Although the remaining residences do not have University-provided wireless networking, some houses and/or residents have set up wireless networks on their own. For example, 9% of students say they have their own wireless access point or router. In residences with unofficial wireless networks, 29% of students say they use the wireless network at least weekly, with 19% saying they use it daily. If wireless were to become available in their residences, 72% said they would use it at least weekly, with 58% saying they would use it daily.

Most comments on wireless focused on the desire to have service expanded to more (if not all) areas of campus and improve quality of service (speed, signal strength, coverage, etc.). Many students also expressed unhappiness with wireless networking being added to certain residences before others (emphasizing why their residence should have wireless added before others) and the availability of wireless in comparison to other academic institutions.

Given the limited funding available for adding wireless networking, the top five areas students said it was important or very important to have wireless networking are (not necessarily in order):

Many students also expressed dissatisfaction with the cost of Internet service in general, highlighting the cost of tuition and the cost of similar services at other academic institutions. Many of these concerns may be addressed with the new telecommunications fee model to be implemented starting in Fall 2005. For more information on this change, please visit the New Telecommuncations Fee FAQ.

RCCs

Resident Computer Coordinators (RCCs) are students who live in each residence and serve on house staffs as local network managers by supporting in-room network connections, educators by running residential programs on computing and working with students in general, consultants by helping residents with computer problems, cluster technicians by helping to take care of the residence clusters, and more. They are managed by the RCC Manager (and the Resident Fellow(s) where applicable) and receive support and training from the entire ResComp central staff. RCCs are the first line of support for residential students and are an integral part of residential life. For more information about RCCs, click here.

Of those students who have asked their RCC for help this past year, 92% percent said they received an initial response in under two days, 68% receiving a response within the same day, and on average, 60% were able to resolve their computer-related problems within the same day. Ninety-three percent rate their RCC's knowledge as excellent or good and 90% rated their RCC's willingness to help as excellent or good.

Residence Computer Cluster Use

ResComp supports a residence cluster in every residence, roughly 350 public computers in 77 locations. Sixty-nine percent say they have used a residence computer cluster this year and of those, 87% rate the availability of cluster computers as good or excellent.

The top five reasons for using the residence clusters are:

  1. Printing (cited by 46% of cluster users)
  2. Study space away from room (45%)
  3. Availability of Windows PC computers (39%)
  4. Convenient location (32%)
  5. Available general software (30%)

For students who use the residence clusters, the top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of residence clusters are:

  1. More support for laptops (e.g. shared displays, wireless networking, laptop-friendly furniture) (cited by 47% of cluster users)
  2. Color printing - professional/photo quality (24%)
  3. Color printing - general (23%)
  4. More quiet individual study spaces (23%)
  5. More high performance Windows PC computers (21%)

However, when asked how important these changes were (for example, if they would still want them if it meant reducing the total number of computers available), most people (61%) said they were not very important or not important at all.

Central Public Computer Cluster Use

Academic Computing, Residential Computing's parent organization, also provides central public computer clusters in Tresidder Union and Meyer Library. Public computers are also available in Green Library. Forty-six percent of students who answered the survey say they have used one of these clusters this year, with 44% using the cluster in the lobby of Meyer Library, 34% using those on the second floor of Meyer (not including the Multimedia Studio), 36% using those in Tresidder, and 22% using those in the Meyer 24-hour study room.

The top five reasons for using the central public clusters are:

  1. Study space away from residence (cited by 57% of cluster users)
  2. Convenient location (54%)
  3. Availability of Windows PC computers (43%)
  4. Printing (35%)
  5. Available general software (Word, Excel, etc.) (27%)
  6. Availability of group/partner work space (22%)

Only ten percent say they have used the Multimedia Studio and 46% of students who have used public clusters this year said they did not know it existed. A collaborative workspace called TeamSpace has also been set up in Meyer Lobby, but 60% of students who have used public clusters this year said they did not know it existed.

The top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of central clusters are:

  1. More quiet individual study spaces (cited by 26% of cluster users)
  2. More support for laptops (e.g., shared displays, wireless networking, laptop-friendly furniture) (24%)
  3. Color printing - professional/photo quality (22%)
  4. Color printing - general (20%)
  5. Better defined spaces for partner or group work (19%)

However, when asked how important these changes were (for example, if they would still want them if it meant reducing the total number of computers available), 48% answered they were not important at all or not very important, 35% somewhat important, and only 17% pretty important or very important.

If more/better defined group workspaces were made available, 76% of public cluster users said they would use these spaces for class and/or extracurricular projects.
