Stanford University Residential Computing

A department of Academic Computing, Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources

Information & News: Student Computing @ Stanford: Results from the Annual Residence Evaluation: 2001-2002 (Undergraduate)

Summary

Results:

Summary

Demographics:

This year, 3014 students or approximately 84% of all undergrads responded to the survey, roughly split evenly between men and women. About 32% were first-year students, 27% sophomores, 20% juniors and 19% seniors.

Use of Computers:

Regarding equipment:

In terms of platform:

About 79% of students say they use their computers 11 hours a week or more, with about 20% using their computers more than 30 hours per week.

Within five broad categories, the most common personal computer activities are, in order:

  1. Academics (any course-related computer or Internet use), 6 or more hours/week = 59%
  2. Social interaction (social email or discussion groups, instant messaging, chat, etc.), 6 or more hours/week = 31%
  3. Entertainment (music, video, gaming, hobbies, etc.), 6 or more hours/week = 24%
  4. Information (news, jobs, travel, medical, etc.), 6 or more hours/week = 20 %
  5. Commerce (shopping, banking, investing, auctions, etc.), 6 or more hours/week = 3%

Wireless

Many students expressed interest in having wireless access available in more places on campus besides Meyer Library, Tresidder, and the Main Quad. 20% of those who responded to this question said they would probably use wireless if it was available in their residences (including student rooms and common areas), as well as outdoor spaces around campus. 30% of those who answered said they would buy a wireless card for their laptop. 8% said that they already had wireless capablities.

Residence Computer Cluster Use

Residential Computing supports a computer cluster in every residence, roughly 350 public computers in 77 locations. 78% say they have used a residence computer cluster this year and of those, 82% rate the availability of cluster computers as good or excellent.

The top five reasons for using the residence clusters are:

  1. Printing (cited by 53% of cluster users)
  2. Available software, courseware (37%)
  3. Study space away from room (25%)
  4. Multimedia capablities (13%)
  5. High performance computers (13%)

The top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of residence clusters are:

  1. More high performance Windows PC computers (56%)
  2. More quiet individual study spaces (27%)
  3. Multimedia production equipment (21%)
  4. Better spaces for partner or group study (20%)
  5. Multimedia display equipment (20%)

Many students complained about the price of printing, asking for cheaper or free printing. Also, many students asked for more reliable printers and computers.

Central Public Computer Cluster Use

Academic Computing, Residential Computing's parent organization, also provides central public computer clusters in Tresidder Union and Meyer Library. Other public computer clusters also include those in Green Library and sit-down Unix workstations in Sweet Hall. 55% of students who answered the survey say they have used one of these clusters this year with 71 % using the clusters in Meyer, Green and Tresidder and 14% using the cluster in Sweet Hall (as well as the 24 hour Unix cluster in Meyer). Most students use these clusters 1 to 5 hours per week and 87% rate the availability of these computers as good or excellent.

The top five reasons for using the central public clusters are:

  1. Printing (cited by 43% of cluster users)
  2. Study space away from room (35%)
  3. Convenient location (34%)
  4. Available software, courseware (22%)
  5. High performance computers (19%)

The top five suggested improvements that students say "would be great" to increase usefulness of central clusters are:

  1. More high performance Windows PC computers (cited by 40% of cluster users )
  2. More quiet individual study spaces (28%)
  3. Better spaces for partner or group study (23%)
  4. More high performance Apple Macintosh computers (16%)
  5. More Unix or Linux computers (15%)

Again, many students complained about the price of printing, asking for cheaper or free printing. As well as more software and more reliable hardware.
