Stanford University Residential Computing

A department of Academic Computing, Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources

About Residential Computing: Jobs: Selection: RCC: Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What goes into being an RCC?

A. RCCs are Resident Computer Consultants, students who live in each residence and support in-room network connections, residence computer clusters, as well as consult with residents on computer-related problems and other technology needs. To find out more, check out the RCC Job Description. You can also talk to your own RCC - take a look at the RCC Directory.

Q. What's the difference between a Dorm RCC and a Row RCC?

A. Row RCCs have the same responsibilities as Dorm RCCs and must fully participate on the house management team. Row RCC applicants, like all other RCC applicants, must pass a qualifying interview, but are then passed on to and hired by house management teams. Since Row RCCs do not support as many students in each house as other RCCs, Row RCCs are paid on a sliding scale depending on the number of residents in his/her house. For more information on RCC salaries and compensation, click here.

Q. What if I am going to be away Spring quarter?

A. If you are going to be away during Spring quarter, you must contact the RCC Manager at rccmanager@rescomp.stanford.edu to make sure you have a qualifying interview. Then, it is your responsibility to speak to the RFs/CDs or house management teams for the residences you would like to apply to. You should also make sure that you fulfill the CS196 requirement or waive out of that requirement ahead of time. This is a required course for all RCCs.

Q. How do I apply?

A. When made available, you can access all your application materials and resources through ResJobs at http://resjobs.stanford.edu.

Q. What if I am a current RCC or have been one in the past?

A. For former or current RCCs, use the following guidelines for applying:

  • If you are an undergraduate RCC and would like to return to a different residence, you must re-apply, as the RFs or student managers will select you. You need not complete a qualifying interview.
  • If you are a current undergraduate RCC (not including the Row) and would like to return to your residence, you as well as your RF/CD must notify ResComp by the appropriate deadline.
  • If you are a Row RCC and would like to return to your residence, unfortunately you too must re-apply as all student managers for the Row must do. You need not complete a qualifying interview.
  • If you have been an RCC before, but are not one currently, in lieu of a qualifying interview you must meet with the RCC manager to review your time as an RCC.
  • If you are a current graduate RCC and would like to return, you must complete the Graduate RCC application (only certain sections) by the appropriate deadline as well as meet with the RCC manager to review your time as an RCC.
  • If you are a current undergraduate RCC and would like to return as a graduate RCC, you must complete the Graduate RCC application (only certain sections) by the appropriate deadline as well as meet with the RCC manager to review your time as an RCC.

Q. When are applications due? When do I find out if I've gotten an interview? When do I find out if I've gotten an offer?

A. Important dates are posted under each individual selection process information page at http://rescomp.stanford.edu/about/jobs/selection/rcc/.

Q. How can I find out more about the Resident Fellows?

A. You'll have a chance to talk to Resident Fellows and current staff at the RF Info Fair. For more information, please refer to the dates and times listed in the corresponding RCC application.
