Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. What goes into being an RCC? A. RCCs are Resident Computer Consultants, students who live in each residence and support in-room network connections, residence computer clusters, as well as consult with residents on computer-related problems and other technology needs. To find out more, check out the RCC Job Description. Q. What's the difference between Dorm RCC, Row RCC, and Grad RCC? A. All RCCs have the same core set of responsibilites. Undergraduate RCCs (Dorm and Row RCCs) are a part of a house staff or house management team respectively while Graduate RCCs work with the Community Associates. In residences with freshmen, undegraduate RCCs are expected to be a section leader for an introduction to computing course in the residences in the autumn and a multimedia computing course in the residence in the winter quarter. Undergraduate RCCs are also expected to organize at least one community event per quarter in their residence; graduate RCCs are highly encouraged to provide a workshop in their community. All RCCs have varying salaries based on the size of their support zone and for the dorms, whether or not the house has freshmen, some freshmen, or none. For more information on RCC salaries and compensation, click here. Q. What if I am going to be away Spring quarter? A. If you plan to apply to the Row RCC process, your participation in the selection process will not be impacted. You will have to make sure that you fulfill the CS196 course requirement prior to leaving, however. This means that you may need to attend class on the first day Winter quarter to request a waiver, or take CS196 in the Winter quarter. If you are going to be away during Spring quarter and plan to apply to the Dorm RCC process, you must contact the RCC Manager at rccmanager@rescomp.stanford.edu before the Row RCC application due date to make sure you have a first round interview. Then, it is your responsibility to speak to the RFs/CDs for the residences you would like to apply to. It is at the individual RFs/CDs' discretion whether or not they will accept applicants who will be away during Spring quarter and meet with them ahead of time. You must also make sure you fulfill the CS196 requirement or waive out of the requirement ahead of time. This is a required course for all undergraduate RCCs. Since the application materials are completed online, there is no difference in submitting the application materials (including recommendations) compared to an applicant who will not be away Spring quarter. Q. What if I am a 5th year undergraduate or co-term? A. If you are a co-term, you must apply as a graduate RCC to the graduate residences; you will not be able to live in undergraduate housing. You also must have confirmed co-term/graduate status by the final preference submission deadline. If you are a 5th year undergraduate and have a guaranteed year of housing left, you must apply as a Dorm RCC. Q. What's required for the position? A. RCCs are required to be a registered student at Stanford and living in on-campus housing during all three quarters of apppointment. Undergraduate RCCs must have taken the RCC class (CS196) before beginning their position or must have waived out of that requirement for the position. To request a waiver, attend the first day of CS196 either in the winter or spring quarter. Also see the Job Description for more information on requirements for the RCC position.. Q. What if I'm not that technical? A. A general base of technical knowledge is needed, but can be gained through taking CS 196 offered during winter and spring quarters. This course is required for Row and Dorm RCC applicants and is highly recommended for Grad RCC applicants. In addition, all RCCs are required to attend training before the start of the school year. This includes information sessions on recent changes in Stanford computing resources as well as hands-on obstacle courses to better prepare RCCs for problems they will face on the job. In addition, the ability to problem solve and learn on the job is very important for RCCs as they will encounter problems that they have never seen before. Q. If I already know I want to apply, what can I do to get started? A. If the application is not yet available, for undergraduates, you can make sure that you fulfill the CS196 course requirement for the position either by taking the course, or requesting a waiver on the first day of class; you don't have to wait until the year you wish to apply to fulfill the requirement. For all applicants, identify recommenders and ask them ahead of time. Once the application is available, you can then request to send the recommendation form to them. Q. How do I apply? A. When made available, you can access all your application materials and resources through ResJobs at http://resjobs.stanford.edu. Q. Who should I ask for a recommendation? A. It is a good idea to ask someone who can assess your abilities as an RCC. Ideally this person knows about the responsibilities of the RCC position, but it is not required. Current RCCs, other house staff members, RFs, professors and previous supervisors outside of Stanford are some examples. We recommend that you request more than one recommendation in the event that one of your recommenders is not able to submit a recommendation by the deadline; two or more recommendations also tend to give the hiring committees a better basis for their decisions. Q. When are applications due? When do I find out if I've gotten an interview? When do I find out if I've gotten an offer? A. Important dates are posted in the ResJobs System under the appropriate RCC process at http://resjobs.stanford.edu. You may check your application status through the ResJobs system. Q. If I've completed an application in the past, can I reuse a recommendation that was previously submitted for me? A. Unfortunately, you must have another recommendation submitted for you so that the hiring teams will have the most updated information. Q. If I've previously applied, do I need to interview again? A. If you've applied in a previous year, you will need to interview with ResComp again. However, if you've applied to the Row RCC process and are applying to the Dorm RCC process in the same academic year, you may request to forward your first round ResComp interview results to the Dorm RCC process. If you are a current RCC, you do not need to interview with ResComp. Q. How can I find out more about the Resident Fellows and Houses? A. For more information on Resident Fellows, you can read their bios. Also, for the Row Houses and Resident Fellows, usually you can find out more through scheduled open houses or info faires. Check the application materials for dates. Q. What if I am a current RCC or have been one in the past? A. For former or current RCCs, use the following guidelines for applying:
